Support is available during the England matches

Football

As the England matches get underway, many of us will be enjoying the excitement of the games with friends and family.

However, national campaigns and housing providers are also using this time to raise awareness that for some people, major football tournaments can be a difficult and worrying period.

Research has shown that incidents of domestic abuse can increase around major matches. While football itself does not cause abuse, heightened emotions, alcohol consumption and existing behaviours can mean that situations escalate.

We want to be clear:

  • Domestic abuse is never acceptable
  • Support is available
  • We are here to help our residents

If you are worried about yourself or someone else

You are not alone. There are people who can help and support you safely and confidentially.

  • In an emergency, always call 999
  • National Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0808 2000 247 (24/7)
  • If you can’t speak, call 999 and press 55 when prompted

You can also contact us directly and we will support you in a way that feels safe for you.

What to look out for

If you’re concerned about someone, signs may include:

  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Anxiety around a partner’s reactions
  • Changes in behaviour during or after matches

Looking out for each other

We all have a role to play. Checking in on friends, family or neighbours and knowing where to signpost support can make a real difference.
