Fire safety
Keeping you safe from fire is a top priority. This page explains what to do in an emergency, how we manage fire safety in our buildings, the legal responsibilities we hold, and simple actions you can take to reduce risk in your home and communal areas.
We also offer:
- Hoarding Support – Tailored help to reduce fire risks and improve safety.
- Mobility Scooter Policy – Clear guidance on safe storage and use. Read it here.
Check out our Fire Safety booklet here.
What to do in an emergency
Every building is different. Check the fire action notice displayed in your block so you know whether to evacuate or stay put in the event of a fire. If you are unsure which advice applies to your property, follow the instructions on the notice and the directions of emergency services.

You will have recently received important fire information. Please watch our short video to find out more.
Evacuations and Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)
If you would need help evacuating in an emergency, tell us as soon as possible so we can arrange a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) with you. A PEEP records the support you need and helps emergency services and staff respond quickly and safely.
Our fire safety programme and legal responsibilities
We have a full fire safety programme and appoint a Competent Person to help us meet legal requirements. We carry out regular, comprehensive Fire Risk Assessments (FRAs) for blocks of flats and supported schemes, act on the recommendations they include, and display fire escape plans and action signage in communal areas. Housing Solutions is the designated Responsible Person for our communal buildings unless a managing agent is appointed for a block.
If you’d like a copy of your building’s FRA you can scan the QR code within your communal notice board, request one by emailing firesafety@housingsolutions.co.uk or by calling our Contact Centre on 01628 543101 and giving your address.
Fire doors and communal areas
Fire doors are essential for containing fire and protecting everyone in the building. Do not prop fire doors open, alter them, or damage self-closing devices. Report any faults or damage to fire doors or door closers immediately by calling 01628 543101 so we can make repairs promptly.
Keep communal areas, corridors and balconies clear of belongings and anything flammable. Do not smoke in internal communal areas and take care when cooking or using candles.
Smoke alarms and testing
Check your smoke alarms weekly by pressing the test button. If alarms are linked, testing one should trigger all alarms in your home. Leaseholders are responsible for testing, replacing batteries and ensuring alarms remain in working order in their property. Contact us if a communal or fitted alarm is not working so we can arrange repairs.
Five quick steps to change a smoke alarm battery:
- Unclip or twist off the alarm cover to access the battery.
- Remove the old battery.
- Fit a new battery of the correct voltage (check the manufacturer’s instructions).
- Replace the cover.
- Press the test button to confirm the alarm sounds.

Who we work with
We work with Savills UK as our Competent Person to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and to review FRAs and other fire safety actions across our properties.
In addition, we encourage residents to take advantage of the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s free Safe and Well visits. These home visits offer tailored fire safety advice, smoke alarm checks, and support for vulnerable individuals. You can find out more or book a visit here.
Final reminders
- Read the fire noticeboard for your block and keep up to date with any building-specific instructions via the QR code found here.
- Test smoke alarms weekly and report faults straight away.
- Never prop open fire doors or store items in communal escape routes.
