Housing Solutions are installing the infrastructure for this service free of charge.
The Wi-Fi cabling and equipment will be installed by our 3rd party provider, Social Telecoms, who already provide Wi-Fi to many of our other buildings and schemes. To enable you to have your own connection Social Telecoms will need to access your property to install cabling and small access points both inside and outside of the properties.
Once the installation has been completed we will send you joining instructions, along with your unique access code.
We appreciate that some residents may already have a Wi-Fi service installed in their property and may not choose to use the new Wi-Fi. Please be assured that the Social Telecom Wi-Fi will not affect or interrupt usage of your existing Wi-Fi.
About Social Telecoms
- Social Telecoms CIC is a Social Enterprise that has been running since 2012. As a Community Interest Company (CIC) they are legally obliged to reinvest 70% of profits back into the community. They do this via digital inclusion projects across the country. Some of their recent projects have included an estate Wi-Fi and community engagement program in Shropshire, a Wi-Fi service for a homeless project in Edinburgh and they also support a number of smaller projects along the south coast and up to Scotland.
- They’re the leading provider of telecommunications services to the Social Housing Sector. As well as corporate communications they manage around 800 scheme Wi-Fi projects around the U.K.
FAQ’s
1. |
Why are you installing Wi-Fi? |
|
Housing Solutions are keen to ensure as many of its residents as possible have access to digital services. |
2. |
Does the fact the Wi-Fi is free mean low quality? |
|
No, the system we are installing will do almost everything a home connection will do, apart from the following: 1. Stream 4K ultra high definition videos 2. Use peer to peer transfer sites (torrents) 3. Some high-capacity online games will struggle. |
3. |
Why can’t we stream 4K and play online games? |
|
4K streaming requires a huge amount of bandwidth* as do some games. To ensure everyone has a fair share of internet access we must limit the bandwidth to each individual device. This is called throttling* |
4. |
Will it be secure? |
|
Yes, all our networks are as secure, or more so, than a home connection. |
5. |
Can anyone see what I’m doing online? |
|
No, neither Social Telecoms of Housing Solutions can see your browsing history. The system does record general usage information for analysis but it doesn’t record what anybody has been specifically viewing. Depending on the type of system installed we may record the total usage for your property, this is typically so that assistance can be offered to those struggling to use the internet. |
6. |
I already have my own broadband – should I stop using it? |
|
That is up to you, we would suggest you try the new system when it’s installed then make up your mind. |
7. |
Will I be able to use a wireless printer, Alexa or other Internet of Things (IoT) devices? |
|
Yes, the system being installed will give you your own private network for your property. Once the device you want to use is on the network it will work just like any other home setup. |
