• Aids and Adaptations

We are committed to supporting residents to live independently and safely in their homes. Our approach is guided by the Equality Act 2010, Care Act 2014, and the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, and aligns with the Consumer Standards 2024.

    What Are Aids and Adaptations?

Adaptations help residents with disabilities to live more independently. These can be:

    • Equipment and Aids (portable items)
    • Minor Adaptations (small changes)
    • Major Adaptations (structural changes)
  • 1. Equipment and Aids

These are provided by your Local Authority’s Adult Social Care team, depending on where your home is located. Examples include:

    • Portable hoists
    • Hospital beds
    • Toilet frames
    • Shower chairs
    • Bathing equipment

Note: All requests must go directly to your Local Authority. If you're unsure who to contact, please speak to us first on 01628 543101 or email Surveying.Team@housingsolutions.co.uk, and we’ll guide you to the right team.

  • 2. Minor Adaptations

Usually recommended by an Occupational Therapist (funding support can be offered by Housing Solutions on a case by case basis and per our Aids and adaptations policy). Examples:

    • Grab rails
    • Lever taps
    • Handrails near steps/stairs
    • Small/removable ramps
    • Flashing/amplified doorbells
  • 3. Major Adaptations

hese may involve structural changes. Examples:

    • Level access showers
    • Stair lifts
    • Through-floor lifts
    • Permanent ramps
    • Tracked hoists
    • Door widening

Major adaptations may be funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG), which is means-tested (unless for a child). The maximum grant is £30,000.

  • How to Apply
    1. Contact your Local Authority’s Adult Social Care team and state you're a Housing Solutions tenant.
    2. An Occupational Therapist will assess your needs.
    3. The OT will send recommendations to Housing Solutions.
    4. For help, call 01628 543101 or email Surveying.Team@housingsolutions.co.uk.
  • What Happens Next?
    • Minor adaptations are completed within standard repair times.
    • Major adaptations follow a formal approval and planning process.
    • We aim to complete approved adaptations within 12 months of receiving all documentation.
    • We’ll keep you updated throughout the process.
  • Resident Contributions

If a financial contribution is required:

    • Housing Solutions can pay a contribution dependant on the criteria within our policy
    • The remainder is paid by the resident: 50% upfront, 50% on completion.
    • Repayment plans may be available over 12 months.
  • Installing Your Own Adaptations

You must request permission before installing any aids or adaptations. If approved:

    • You are responsible for servicing and maintenance.
    • You may need to remove items if you move out.
  • Adaptations to Communal Areas

Requests for adaptations to shared spaces are assessed case-by-case, considering:

    • Health and safety
    • Impact on other residents
    • Suitability of the property
  • Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)

If you or someone in your household has a disability, you may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) to help make your home safer and more accessible. This grant can fund essential adaptations such as:

    • Installing ramps or stairlifts
    • Widening doorways
    • Adapting bathrooms (e.g. level-access showers)
    • Improving access to rooms and facilities
    • Enhancing heating or lighting controls for easier use

The grant is means-tested, which means your income and savings will be considered when assessing eligibility. However, children under 18 who require adaptations are not subject to means testing.

To apply, you’ll need to be assessed by an Occupational Therapist, who will recommend the necessary changes. We’ll then work with you to develop a plan and guide you through the application process.
