We have recently recruited two apprentices.   I met up with our IT apprentice Ellis to see how he is finding his experience with the programme.  

He explained that he left school and went onto college where he graduated with qualifications in photography, film studies, English literature and an EPQ.  He had unconditional places at University but took a year to think through what he really wanted to do whilst undertaking some volunteer work with RBWM supporting their job support club ‘Grow your Own.'   Ellis has always had an interest in technology and is an ardent fan of gaming, so when he heard of an opportunity to be an IT apprentice it really appealed.

Ellis was chosen from several applicants to come along to an open day where he took part in a team assessment exercise.  He then had to complete a question in essay form around designing an appealing App.  Following that he had an interview with our Head of Digital and Information Services as well as the IT Applications Manager.  Ellis said that part was fine as they were both really nice! 

Ellis started his apprenticeship with us in October 2019.  He is in the office 3 out of 4 weeks per month and then attends a week long course at QA training centre in Reading.  It’s fantastic to have Ellis on the team and watch his development within the role and how his confidence is growing.   

As part of the Digital & Information System team Ellis primarily offers IT support, works on projects and testing.  This means he interacts with and supports colleagues across the business including senior managers. Amongst the projects that Ellis has been involved in he has helped to assist our L&D Department with setting up a meeting sharing platform.  This enables users to record a webinar for the organisation; thus, supporting our digital push.

The D&IS team have recently been nominated by the UKHA for the technology category for their work on an innovative Alexa Project which supports and enables our customers to have an even better customer experience.  It’s a real acknowledgement to the benefits of an apprenticeship program that Ellis is part of this team.    When I asked Ellis if he would recommend an apprenticeship program, he was unequivocal in his support.  “I’m really happy” he said.  You can’t get a better recommendation than knowing someone is happy in their job!
