In the aftermath of the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in June, it is understandable and inevitable that many of us have reflected on our own circumstances and safety. We therefore wanted to offer you some reassurance and remind you that Housing Solutions does, and will always take fire safety very seriously. This includes (but is not limited too) the following:

  • Housing Solutions carry out full and comprehensive Fire Risk Assessments of all blocks of flats and sheltered and supported schemes every year.
  • All of our Fire Risk Assessments are carried out by external specialist fire consultants who advise us on all aspects of maintaining and improving fire safety. Housing Solutions has a process in place to act on any recommendations that come out of these risk assessments.
  • The association also carry out six monthly checks to fire doors, testing of fire detection systems and means of escape lighting, all in line with British Standards.
  • Fire escape plans are displayed in schemes with communal areas. This information provides guidance on what to do in the event of a fire, so it is important that you please take the time to read is. If you or any other resident aren’t totally clear how to evacuate your property safely please do not hesitate to contact us.
  • Our staff carry out regular estate inspections, ensuring all passages and corridors are kept clear
  • Keeping customers and visitors informed of actions to be taken in the event of an emergency through fire action signage

We are continuing to work closely with industry experts and the local fire service to ensure we comply with all necessary fire regulations. If there are any changes to regulations when the report into the cause of the Grenfell fire is published, we will ensure we act quickly in response to those changes and implement any recommendations across all of our homes.

It is important that we work together to stay safe. I would therefore ask all residents take the following action:

  • Check that all smoke detectors in your home are working on a weekly basis and contact us if they are not.
  • Keep all communal halls, balconies and escape routes completely clear from items which could cause an obstruction during evacuation in an emergency or could be flammable and cause the fire to spread.
  • Do not wedge open doors in communal areas. Fire doors are designed to provide a minimum of 30 minutes fire resistance. However in order to work effectively they must sit firm against the door frame.
  • Familiarise yourself with the fire and emergency plan for your building. Please remember each scheme/block will be slightly different so it is always worth checking regularly to ensure you know what action you should take in an emergency.
  • Do not smoke in any internal communal area.
  • In the event of a fire do not use the lift, use the stairs if safe to do so.
