Luke’s face is probably one you have seen around Maidenhead as our Grounds and Cleaning Supervisor; he is one of our main customer facing members of staff.  With 250 stairwells to clean a week and 100,000 sq. metres of grass to cut along with a variety of other responsibilities, he is kept extremely busy.

Luke Gazur has been with Housing Solutions for over 11 years and I caught up with him to find out what has kept him at Housing Solutions for so long.  “I’ve always been a practical, hands on person” Luke explained.  “When I was leaving school, I was initially an apprentice mechanic.” He liked the job but unfortunately the garage closed down which meant that Luke’s career path took a different direction.  He then trained as a plumber while working for his dads ground maintenance company as well as completing a plumbing course at College.  When his Dad relocated to Scotland, Luke was settled with a family so wanted to stay in Berkshire.  At that time Housing Solutions were recruiting a multi-trades role which required someone to undertake regular cyclical maintenance of our Care Homes and they particularly needed someone who was good with people as well as being a skilled plumber.   “I really enjoyed the work looking after properties for our older residents, making sure they had a pleasant, safe home to live in that stayed warm and well maintained.” Luke explained.  After 2 years in this role there was an opportunity to work as the Temporary Supervisor of the Grounds and Caretaking Team which would give Luke a chance to work in a different department.

For the last 18 months Luke has been the permanent Grounds and Cleaning Supervisor. In this position Luke oversees a hardworking and diligent team of 26.  His day starts early where he opens the offices at 06:45. Typically the team start work at 08:00 but they like to get together early to make sure everyone is doing okay, have a coffee and get the schedule of work assigned.  Luke will then respond to emails, queries and complaints.   Luke works closely with our TNOs as they undertake Estate Inspections and report any issues that need addressing.  He is also responsible for managing budgets, running specific projects, clearing garages for relets, as well as clearing void properties and arranging clean ups when people indiscriminately fly tip.   He also makes sure that we have a complete stock of cleaning products and equipment available.

Every day is different which is another aspect of his role that he enjoys, “you can never predict what you will be asked to help with that day” Luke says.   So, what has kept Luke with Housing Solutions for so long?   Luke enjoys the variety of work as well as the interaction he has with our customers, ensuring that they are happy where they live and that he can contribute to the quality of their environment.
